AI won't fix hiring bias — unless you fix the data first

The recent Workday lawsuit has once again put a spotlight on one of AI's ugliest vulnerabilities: when trained on biased data, even the most sophisticated algorithms can amplify existing discrimination — not eliminate it.
In the Workday case, the plaintiff alleges that the platform's automated screening tools led to unfair treatment of candidates based on race, age, and disability. Whether or not the case succeeds in court, one thing is clear for every hiring leader watching:

The real problem isn't the algorithm — it's what you feed it.
Most AI hiring tools are built on top of resume data.
That's already a problem. Resumes reflect unequal systems:
- Educational access gaps.
- Career breaks (often penalizing parents and caregivers).
- Company name signaling (favoring prestige over capability).
- Keyword gaming (rewarding those who know how to write for ATS filters).
If your AI is only scanning prior job titles, university degrees, and bullet-point buzzwords — you're simply automating the same biased heuristics humans have always used.
Garbage in → garbage out.
Or worse: Bias in → bias amplified.
